This is a controversial topic and no right or wrong just depends on the person.
Boxers and Thai boxers jog most days but do they need to or is it to give them a mental edge?
Let me start this topic with my personal opinion which is you do not need to jog for fitness when it comes to combat sport if you have the right strength and conditioning program in place.
Being a strength and conditioning coach I know that steady state cardio does play a role in conditioning my athletes, but does it have to come in the form of jogging? for me this depends on the sport, for combat athletes I don't believe it does. My athletes and my own steady state cardio comes in the way of light bag work and drilling combos and not raising the heart rate too high.
Do I jog? No, the only time I jog is to clear my head. Did I jog for any of my own fights? (my coach will not like this answer as he told us to jog two to three times a week when in fight camp) No I didn't, I did one jog closer to the fight just to clear my head. Do my combat athletes jog? this is their personal choice, I don't tell them to, but I know for some athletes it gives them a mental edge and can also help with maintaining weight loss throughout the fight camp.
